Creating a kind of filtered (dynamic) lookup?

Hello,

is there a way to filter a lookup field?

I have a list with a lookup to a different list to make a choice from. As the list is expected to become very large, I like to use a filter to limit what the choices can be. Anybody can guide me where this can be set, I assume the filter would be CAML Query based.
